No.1: Freedom of Choice
Most people opt to self build because it offers complete freedom of choice over the design and layout of the property. According to research carried out by Potton, 71%of homeowners considering self build would build a traditional style property rather than contemporary. When it comes to the interior layouts, 66% said they would build a 4 bedroom property. What is more, self builders save themselves £10,000 or more on home improvements; a cost incurred by the average homeowner buying a property ‘off the shelf' (Source: Research conducted by Potton and Build It magazine).
No. 2: Profit Potential
It is possible to create between £100,000 - £300,000 equity by building a home from scratch.
As such, it is no surprise that 20% of Potton customers are ‘serial self builders'; some have built two or three times .... and in today's market, the third house is often free!
No. 3: Speed of Construction
It is possible to build a property in under 12 weeks. Potton's build schedule, provided to all customers as part of the company's Build Portfolio, follows a 12 week programme which shows when the various trades and materials should be onsite. Unlike traditional forms of construction, Potton's timber frame packages can be erected in a week and once the roof is on, work can be carried out inside and out in tandem, ensuring that build finished on time.

Anyone who has renovated a property will understand that the costs and hassle of uncovering unforeseen problems can be enormous. Barn conversions are a national favourite, but gaining planning permission is often difficult and once renovation work starts, conversions can pose a myriad of problems, which may not have been accounted for at the outset. Around 70% of people opt to self build because they are unable to find the right property on the open market at the right or in the right location.
