An architect with a vision to preserve Britain's early industrial heritage has transformed a 12th century mill in the historical town of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire into six unique contemporary apartments. Previously used as a nightclub, Abbey Mill had suffered a rough ride in recent years and had fallen out of favour with local residents who were being kept awake into the small hours by rowdy party-goers.

Recorded in the Doomsday Book, historical Abbey Mill was originally constructed by Benedictine Monks from the nearby Monastery who diverted the River Avon into Tewkesbury to power the mill and make flour for the local inhabitants. Grain from as far afield as the USA and Canada was milled at Tewkesbury, as well as local produce from the surrounding farmland.

Local architect, Nick Purchase, has designed the six apartments, which have two or three bedrooms and between 1,000 - 1,200 sq ft of living space. The original features of the Mill such as the water wheel, grinding stones, original beams and cast-iron columns have been integrated into the new apartments, ensuring the building remains faithful to its historical past.

All the windows at Abbey Mill are either restored originals or newly built replicas in accordance with Grade II listed requirements, while the external doors are constructed from solid oak.

Architect Nick Purchase comments: "The Mill is recognised within the area as a landmark building, with an important place in the hearts of local residents. I was determined throughout the restoration to remain true to the building's origins, whilst ensuring its survival into this century and the next by creating sleek, contemporary living spaces. With the guidance of local authority specialists, we have paid enormous attention to detail, ensuring that the essence of the building is preserved."

Each apartment is equipped with a family bathroom by Jacuzzi, en suite facilities to the master bedroom, fitted wardrobes in the bedrooms and high specification Sheraton/Neff kitchens with integrated appliances. Beautiful views of the River Avon can be enjoyed from every apartment, as well as vistas across the flat plains of the Ham. All the apartments have an underground parking space and residents will share a large communal terrace in an elevated position overlooking the river.

Tewkesbury itself has one of the most admired medieval townscapes in England, with fine period buildings, narrow alleyways and courtyards. Cosmopolitan Cheltenham and Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon are both easily accessible from Tewkesbury.

Prices start at £285,000 for a two-bedroom apartment. For further information or to view the Abbey Mill furnished show flat, please contact Andrews on 01242 698000 or Carver Knowles on 01242 698000.
