All too often, books about property state the blindingly obvious or are too general in their approach, never sinking their teeth into a subject. For an excellent exception to this rule, check out the series of tax guides produced by the Tax Café (taxcafe.co.uk), a popular UK website offering tax books, software and advice to help people minimise their tax payments.
The tax experts who run the site are particularly strong on property tax, and these three guides, Russell Eaton’s How to avoid stamp duty, and Carl Bayley’s How to avoid property tax and Using a property company to save tax, are all exceptionally useful, packed with little-known, but perfectly legal, tips on how to pay less on your house or flat.
Reading a whole guide about tax is a bitter pill to swallow, but the authors sweeten their subject matter as much as possible, with a simple, plain English approach with helpful summaries, flow diagrams and tip boxes, which take the reader on a primrose path to lower tax.
And once you start reading the case histories of Edmund, William, Tom and Louise, who save themselves thousands of pounds by following the authors’ suggested tax strategies, you’ll be sure to read on.
As Carl Bayley wryly remarks in How to avoid property tax, thinking about the many taxes levied on property could drive you to drink, which will raise your tax bill yet higher. But if you do your homework and read the Tax Café guides, you could save yourself enough to reward yourself with vintage Krug.
