The benefits derived from designating an area of sanctuary are certainly not under-estimated in Judith Wilson’s book. An interiors writer and stylist for more than fifteen years Wilson has collected together a fascinating set of images from real homes. The photographs are supplemented by a running commentary as well as by a more detailed exploration of what creates a successful ‘private place’.

The book is neatly arranged in three sections: Room retreats; Quiet Corners and Escape Outdoors and has a useful list of suppliers at the back. From adding partitions and mezzanine flooring to the less elaborate rearrangement of furniture, atmospheric lighting and elimination of clutter, Wilson is an oracle of practical advice on maximizing latent potential in unpromising areas of the house. Wilson’s achievement is in identifying the various steps to tranquility without neglecting the equally important functional aspects such as accessibility of power points and adequate ventilation and heating.

Some of the advice Wilson dispenses may seem commonsense, and, as regards rearrangement of furniture there has been a deluge of feng shui books and articles in recent times, but elsewhere the information on more adventurous renovation of a space is impressive. The inclusion of so many real homes rather than show properties maintains a focus on the inherent possibilities of every room as well as engendering a belief that creating a personal space, be it a bolthole away from the kids or a shared workspace, is an an endlessly achievable objective.

While bemoaning the unceasing trend towards open-plan living, Wilson is equally quick to point out that this need not be a barrier to the establishment of a personal nook or cranny in which refuge can be found. As Wilson eruditely comments at the end of her introduction, “We live in a busy world, but we all deserve a place where we can switch off and dream, or simply stare at a single imaginary spot on the wall”.

It’s time to take refuge in that zone. Readers can order a copy of Private Places by Judith Wilson (Jacqui Small, £20) for the special price of £18 (including postage and packaging) by calling 01903 828503 and quoting ref: or by clicking link above right.
